We have converted this system's mail server from Courier to Dovecot.

The conversion process was seamless and incurred no interruptions of service. The conversion was transparent to end users and no message loss have occurred either.

POP3 users might be prompted to re-download some messages, depending upon their configuration and the timing of message retrieval during the conversion process.

The pros of this system:
<ul style='padding: 5px; list-style-type: circle; list-style-image: none; list-style-position: outside; margin-left: 15px;'>
There are some notable differences between Courier and Dovecot.
DS-Hosting Solutions - Exploited Account Policy.

Exploited Account Policy

If an account on our network is exploited and distributing viruses, spam emails, etc as soon as we are aware of the situation we will immediately suspend the account without advance notice. This measure is to ensure we are operating in compliance with the law and to protect other client accounts from experiencing service interruptions and to prevent your visitors from downloading harmful things to their computers including viruses. Once an account has been suspended there are three options:
<ul style='padding: 5px; list-style-type: circle; list-style-image: none; list-style-position: outside; margin-left: 15px;'>
Account Reset- The account is deleted and re-created. You then can install the latest versions of your scripts from the script developer. There is no fee involved for the first offense. Any future offenses would incur a $20 fine.
Account Restore- DS-HostingSolutions will check the two available backups (one is nightly and the other is weekly made Friday morning) that we have to see if your account was exploited. If the backup is not exploited the account can be restored and the public_html directory will be password protected. It is then your responsibility to update all scripts to the latest versions (overwriting all old files), change all account passwords (including cpanel, email, ftp, mysql, etc.), and check your personal computer for viruses and key loggers. After completing all the above steps you can remove the password protection from within your cPanel account via --> Password Protect a Directory --> Click Public_html and uncheck the box and click save. This type of work is classified as security breach recovery and there is a charge of $20 for the account check and backup restore. If the backups of your site are exploited versions you then must choose option #1 or #3.
Account Repair- You will repair and update all scripts to the latest versions (overwriting all old files), change all account passwords (including cpanel, email, ftp, mysql, etc.), check your personal computer for viruses and key loggers and remove any hacking code from files. Technicians will then review your account in detail to determine if it is no longer compromised and that all scripts are up to date. This type of work is classified as security breach recovery and carries a charge of $10 for the first offense and $20 for future offenses.

Ways to protect your account and ways DS-HostingSolutions helps:
Delete Unused Files and Scripts- A very common source for account exploits is abandoned scripts which are not updated. Clients often install scripts for testing and forget about them, which are subsequently exploited and used to hijack the entire hosting account. Remove stuff you are not using.

Keep scripts up to date- DS-HostingSolutions checks your account weekly for out of date scripts and posts a notice in your cpanel account (x3skin required) and sends you a warning email (requires an email address added to your cpanel account as a contact). Full details..

Use trusted scripts- Use scripts from trusted developers that have a good track record of maintaining and updating their scripts.

Use secure permissions- Never use permissions 777 on folders or 666 on files unless vital to your script operation.

How DS-HostingSolutions helps- DS-HostingSolutions protects your account with firewalls, brute force protection and blocks hundreds of common account exploiting techniques and common hacking code. DS-HostingSolutions also checks your account weekly for out of date scripts and posts a notice in your cpanel account (x3skin required) and sends you a warning email (requires an email address added to your cpanel account as a contact). Full details..
After receiving a notice you should immediately update your script.

SoftLayer Engineers will be performing upgrade maintenance on the customer router some of your servers connect through on Sunday April 13th starting at 3:00am CDT. During this time, engineers will be swapping out the existing supervisor engines (SUP720-3BXL) with new Cisco best of breed supervisor engines (VS-S720-10G-3CXL) on FCR01.DAL01. As this router provides direct connectivity to your server(s), public internet connectivity will be unavailable at various points during the above maintenance window. Although we expect this upgrade of the supervisor engines to only take approximately 15 minutes, we have scheduled a maintenance window from 3:00am to 5am CDT.

Emergency downtime at server UK1 (Update)

There is some link flapping problem at our data center.
That is the current status we received from the local technicians at the data center.
It does effect all servers (not just ours) at the data floor.

Unstable, flapping links can be even more disruptive since they cause constant rerouting of packets. Link and route flapping cause disruptive levels of latency, as well as dropped packets.

The cause and solution for those kind of problems can be searched widely and unfortunately we have to wait till the local technicians have located/fixed the problem so the servers can be brought online again.

The UK1 server hosted within the datacenter RedBus Interhouse in London had an emergency downtime for hours.
UK1 was part of a server move operation by our ISP - which we were unfortunately not made aware of.
Infact, the datacenter move was due to sudden inflated prices by the provider thus the decision was sudden to move elsewhere to keep the prices low.

We sincerely apologize for the lengthy downtime as the server move was completely unexpected.
And we thank you for your continuing patience.

We are now located within the datacenter IpHouse situated in London as well.

SRV1 DOWN [server compromise]: OS RELOAD/RESTORATION

After much of the DNS issues that everybody faced yesterday, SRV1 was compromised at the root level.
The zones were not loading properly because system memory was getting full - this is what DC believed at first, that's why they started checking RAM and HDD. They didn't find any error on RAM or HDD.
No data was damaged nor lost - although a rootkit was installed to hide processes with the primary malicious intent being to send out spam. However, the side affects of this compromise include slow apache load times and email problems as well.

Due these problems at this server, you were not able to reach technical support or our website as well and I apologize that this was the case.
We are working with the datacenter to have the RAID-configured drive array restored as quickly as possible.
The data will be rsync'ed to a third drive in the secondary slot, then the OS reloaded, and then our team will rsync data to their original spots.
The rsync process is basically just copying data from the backup drive to the primary drive. Accounts will not be functional until the entire process completes (we'll restart the apache server, dns service, etc after all the files are copied over). Apache will not start until this is the case.

I anticipate that many are angry about this event and I sympathize with your sentiment. I expect that cancellations will follow - but we are trying our best!

Sunday night maintenance at ThePlanet!

Dear Customers,

At first I would like to say that the recently downtimes we have experienced at node105 are determined to be amateur SYN flood attacks by a handful of IP addresses and they have been happening on and off for the past several days.
We are aware of the problem and hopefully taken care of, we keep monitoring the servers.

Secondly, the following servers should be made aware:

node100.ds-hostingsolutions.net
node101.ds-hostingsolutions.net
node102.ds-hostingsolutions.net
node104.ds-hostingsolutions.net
node105.ds-hostingsolutions.net
node106.ds-hostingsolutions.net

And quoting an message from the data center 'ServerMatrix/ThePlanet':

On Sunday night, July 24, 2005 The Planet will be conducting site-wide network maintenance at the DLLSTX2 and DLLSTX4 data centers for 4 hours, beginning at 11:59PM CDT (GMT-0500) to upgrade firmware code on The Planet's TippingPoint network anti-intrusion system.

Although the work is not expected to affect network availability, it is possible that latency and packet loss may be experienced for very brief periods of time during the upgrade.

Thank you for hosting with us at The Planet.

As such, this isn't necessarily downtime but there might be some "sluggishness" when accessing your websites hosted on these servers during this period of time.

Sincerely,

Dennis Sleeswijk

Fantastico issues! (RESOLVED!)

After the most strenuous/challenging bout of troubleshooting I've done in a long time, Fantastico is back up and operational. In particular, the datacenter and Fantastico developers tried to lend their assistance on the matter but ultimately we managed to nail down the issue to a permissions issues on a few critical executables.

What made it particularly challenging was too many "pointing fingers" episodes amongst the entities involved (us, the DC, Fantastico, etc) and also because there were virtually *no* errors reported by the browser when we were troubleshooting.

Either way, I apologize and thank those that have been patient while we got these issues taken care of. :-)
